Who Is Zebra Club?
The term "Zebra" is used in medicine to describe a rarity. There is a common misconception at UCSC that disability is rare, when in fact there are many disabled students and faculty here. Zebra Club aims to create a space for students with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses to come together, support one another, and raise awareness about the reality that disabled and chronically ill people face on campus. By hosting weekly community meetings, engaging in productive advocacy efforts (e.g., meeting with ADA compliance officers and DRC faculty), and raising awareness about the disabled experience, Zebra Club seeks to bring together and uplift the disabled student body.
Disability Pride Mixer
This spring, Zebra Club will be hosting the first-ever Disability Pride Mixer for disabled and chronically ill students and faculty. Hosted at the wheelchair-accessible Namaste Lounge, catered with food allergies and sensitivities in mind, and planned around mobility-inclusive activities, the Disability Pride Mixer will not only consider accessibility but center it. We hope that by creating an accessible, welcoming space, disabled students will be able to connect with one another and begin to build community.
