About the Huey P. Newton Lab Research Facility
The Huey P. Newton Lab at UC Santa Cruz is raising funds to establish a Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) research facility at the UCSC Center for Agroecology. This innovative space will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary research focused on sustainable food systems, environmental justice, and climate resilience.
Founded and led by UCSC undergraduate Sheyna Burns, the lab is named in honor of Huey P. Newton, UCSC alumnus and co-founder of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, whose legacy of community empowerment and self-determination continues to inspire this work.
In collaboration with the Kapuscinski-Sarker Lab and with support from the UCSC Center for Agroecology, the facility will support research in hydroponics, aquaponics, agrivoltaics, and urban food production.
Our $25,000 Spring Give goal will fund:
-
Site preparation (permits, grading, foundation, utility trenching etc)
This facility will expand opportunities for students and help cultivate the next generation of scientists, growers, and food justice leaders, rooted in innovation, equity, and community impact.
Join us in building a future where science serves the people.
