Inspire Gen Z to learn to love reading again!
Kresge College surveyed our students over the past two years and we learned that many students like to read for pleasure, and most strongly prefer reading on paper – more than 90% said it made a difference to their learning. And scientific research shows that students learn better this way.
In Spring 2025, Kresge launched Learn to Love Reading Again (LRRA), a series of small reading seminars open to all undergraduates and based on three principles: 1) we read for the sake of reading, not for a test; 2) we engage in discussion to deepen our insight; and 3) we read on paper. Students receive course books and readers on paper, for free. All LLRA seminars are only 2 units, allowing even those students with heavy courseloads to participate. Our two Spring seminars – Reading Sci-Fi and Reading Marx – filled immediately.
We also embrace hard-copy reading in our Core course, providing all Kresge first-years with a paper copy of the anchor text for free, and a paper copy of the reader for $5. Next year’s anchor text is Thi Bui’s The Best We Could Do, a graphic novel of migration to the United States.
Our goal is to show the smart-phone generation that old-school reading is still a rich and rewarding experience, so that they continue this practice on their own.
Kresge relies on donors for our reading initiative, which costs $12,000 each year. Your gift today will help fund students’ books and readers next year.
Join us in championing the joy of reading for the next generation!
