About

The goal of Minorities and Philosophy (MAP) at UCSC is to increase diversity in philosophy, discussion, and awareness of minoritized philosophers and to develop an inclusive community space for graduate and undergraduate members.

Our structure involves our graduate and undergraduate members leading events—including graduate school workshops, reading groups, colloquium talks, speaker events, study halls, movie nights, the sharing of program resources for undergraduates interested in applying to summer philosophy programs, social mixers, and hikes! We hope to use the funds for this year to start a mentorship program and to fund events and speakers that are open to all UCSC students.

Highlights of last year:

  • We raised $7,125 to enable 16 students to attend the Pacific American Philosophical Association conference, covering the cost of registration, room, and board for three days.
  • Held a colloquium talk on the philosophy of disability.
  • Hiked to the Seymour Center, Pogonip, and the UCSC Arboretum, where we held a study hall.
  • Hosted a film screening in collaboration with Prof. Dinishak on Werner Herzog's Theatre of Thought.

This year we plan to:

  • Host a mentorship program.
  • Implement a board structure to increase the resources we offer.
  • Host colloquium events where graduates and undergraduates can share their ideas and receive feedback.
  • Hold regular reading groups related to minoritized perspectives.
  • Host speakers for talks and workshops.
  • Build community by planning social events: hikes, arts events, and more!

We're so excited for everything the coming year has to bring. We believe MAP is more vital now than ever, and we hope you'll partner with us in building a community space for UCSC students!
