Field experiences and summer field camp are defining events for EPS undergrads at UCSC and can be an important part of completing an earth science degree. However, camping can also be an access barrier for an earth science education and career.
We are GEODES (Geologists Encouraging Openness and Diversity in Earth Science), an organization made up of grad students in the EPS department, and we want to make these defining field-based experiences as welcoming and accessible to as many undergraduates as possible. This year we will be hosting an introductory camping trip to teach EPS undergrads camping skills before they have to use them in the field, so that when they do go out into the field they can focus on learning, and we need your help to raise the funds to do this! The money we raise will pay for gear rentals, campsite fees, transportation, and food. A donation of $50 can sponsor one undergrad for the weekend!
Field camp is often something that students look back on fondly and is a defining experience in the career of an earth scientist. This trip will help us ensure that more students have access to this experience, and we hope you can contribute and support in any amount that you are able!
