Help support the next generation of genomics student researchers by giving to the Building Just Genomics with HBCUs Giving Day campaign! Your donation will help us with a critical dimension of the training of future leaders in the fields of science and justice: collaborating with and learning from diverse perspectives.
The UCSC Division of Graduate Studies; the Office of African, Black, and Caribbean Student Success; and the Science and Justice Research Center are building intentional collaborations with North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCATSU), a Historically Black College/University (HBCU), in order to support the next generation of genomics student researchers and future leaders in the fields of science and justice. This project provides UCSC and NCATSU undergraduate and graduate students and faculty with important opportunities to gain valuable professional development experiences in the pursuit of research, community, and knowledge exchange. Participants learn about the history of Black science at HBCUs; experience the environment at NCATSU and in Greensboro during a week-long visit; participate in research collaborations; connect with UCSC and NCATSU students and faculty; engage in discussions about the social and ethical implications of genomics research; and present their collaborative research work at virtual symposia. We are also excited to host a group of NCATSU scholars at UCSC in spring quarter.
With your support, we can:
- Invite more students and faculty to participate.
- Extend the program schedule.
- Provide continuity, mentorship, and graded levels of expertise supportive of UCSC / NCATSU student acculturation and retention.
- Develop more mechanisms for co-teaching and learning exchanges.
